How to Make a Music Mind Map in Microsoft Word

Do you have an idea for a new song? Are you working on an instrument composition? Whatever it may be, mind maps go a long way in helping any musical endeavor.

As explained by Medium (an online resource for creativity), mind maps are visual charts that let people intuitively arrange ideas into a hierarchical format. This makes these diagrams especially useful for something as complex and nuanced as music.

However, maybe you’re not familiar with how to make a music mind map in MS Word. Well, don’t fret--just read our tips (below) and you’ll have what you need in no time!

1. Come up with Your Central Idea or Topic

Before you work on the chart itself, it’s imperative that you think of what your main idea is. Mind maps work by using ideas to create new ones. And, with the help of these newer ideas, you gain more information that’s used for whatever you need.

The initial broad idea can be anything that relates to your musical subject. It can be about the harmony in a jazz number or a theory for how a song’s rhythm works.

2. Using Shapes for Your Music Mind Map

With a new document in MS Word, start by typing in a title at the top. Make it something brief yet descriptive, like “Rap Composition Project” or “Instrument Rhythm Study.”

Next, add your main idea to the document by using your shape of choice. Go to Insert > Shape and then pick your desired option before click-dragging it into a spot. Label the shape with your main music topic by right-clicking it and then choosing Add Text.

3. Discovering New Ideas for Your Music Mind Map

Now that you have your primary topic inserted, the next part is expanding your mind map. Whenever you come up with new ideas from the main topic, add more shapes around the first one then label them as needed. Connect the newer shapes to their parent by going to Insert > Shapes and then picking one of the options under Lines.

4. Continue Expanding Your Music Mind Map
