A clinic is a health facility that is primarily focused on the care of outpatients. Clinics can be privately operated or publicly managed and funded. In comparison to larger hospitals, which provide more specialized services and accept inpatients for overnight stays, they usually cover the primary care needs of populations in local communities.
The term "clinic" is most widely used to describe a general practice operated by one or more general practitioners who provide minor therapeutic treatments, but it may also refer to a specialist clinic. Even as they expand into institutions as big as major hospitals or become affiliated with a hospital or medical school, some clinics keep the name "clinic." Clinics are often linked to a general medical practice managed by one or more general practitioners. Other clinics are operated by the type of doctor associated with that type: physiotherapists run physiotherapy clinics, clinical psychologists run psychology clinics, and so on for each health career. Some clinics are run in-house by employers, government agencies, or hospitals, while others are outsourced to private companies that specialize in delivering health care services. In China, for example, owners of such clinics do not have formal medical education. Mobile health clinics or roadside dispensaries, some of which incorporate conventional medicine, provide health care to large rural areas in India, China, Russia, and Africa.
