How to Create a Personal Mind Map in Apple Pages
Creating and organizing your own personal goals can be a daunting task; however, with the visual nature of a mind map, it doesn’t have to be as hard as it usually is! Medium.com describes the mind map as a visual chart used in forming and managing related ideas into a branching hierarchy.
Plus, we’ve composed a set of tips (below) to show you just how easy it is to make a mind map using macOS and Apple Pages!
1. Starting With Your Main Idea
Go ahead and open a new document in Apple Pages. To make a mind map, you’ll need to incorporate some simple shapes, lines, and labels. But, before that, you should first get rid of the text field by unchecking Document Body under the Document tab to the right. And now it’s time to input your main idea/topic/question; click on Shapes and pick which you’d like to put the idea into. Then, after placing down the shape, double-click it to label as needed.
2. Add More Shapes and Ideas
Now that you have the central idea of your mind map established, get those brain juices flowing and think of new ideas from there. For example, if your main idea is Personal Identity, then the new ones could be Fashion Sense, Art Skills, or whatever else you think would relate.
After coming up with these new concepts, update your visuals appropriately. Use the same Shape tab to add however many you need, positioning each around and close to the original shape--don’t forget to label. Next, you should add connecting lines between your shapes; CMD-click both the original shape and a new one, then go to Insert and choose from one of the options under Line.
3. Even More New Ideas
With an initial layer of new ideas in your document, keep going and think of more new ideas! And then even more! Use the first set of new ideas as your main categories, creating a branching pattern of sub-categories for each new layer. Keep the chart updated with more shapes and lines.
4. Arrange Your Mind Map
You should try to keep your mind map from looking too cluttered and messy, so remember that you can move around your shapes by click-dragging them around--the lines will automatically adjust and maintain their connections. To resize your shapes, simply click-drag one of the square nodes found on the sides and corners of the shapes.
