How to Make a Music Mind Map in Google Docs

Whether as a hobby or a profession, composing music has challenges that require a creative approach to them--which is where a mind map comes in. By using a mind map, you have an effective tool for coming up with fresh ideas and concepts.

1. Do a Bit of Research

Before you start brainstorming, it helps to study up on what you need for your musical project. As you research, try to think of some ideas or topics you can use as your mind map’s starting point. Be sure to take some notes as a reference later.

2. Apply the Main Keyword

After you’re done with your research, take your notes and form a main idea/keyword that you can start off from.

Open a new file/template in Google Docs and place your main idea at the center of your mind map. From here, you can start building a structure of new keywords.

3. Start Branching Out

Now that you have a central music concept for your mind map, you should start thinking of new keywords from there. For example, if your main keyword is labeled as Instruments, then it could expand to Instrument Types, Historical Specialists, Rare Instruments, or whatever else you can think of.

As you create new ideas, add them to your mind map by placing them around the center. Include lines that go from the main keyword to each of the new ones.

4. Keep Expanding

With your first layer of new keywords, go ahead and use each of those in coming up with even more ideas/concepts. While adding more and more content to your mind map, be sure to keep it all organized by emulating a tree-like branching pattern.
