A ranch is a piece of land (Real Estate) with numerous structures dedicated to ranching, which is the process of rearing grazing livestock like cattle and sheep. It is a farm's subtype. Ranchers, cattlemen, and stockgrowers are all terms used to describe someone who owns or operates a ranch. Ranching is also a means of raising unusual livestock such as horses, elk, American bison, alpaca, and even ostriches and emus. Ranches are typically big expanses, but they can be of any size. Many ranches in the western United States are made up of privately held land augmented by grazing leases on land managed by the federal Bureau of Land Management or the US Forest Service. The ranch may also engage in some restricted farming, raising crops for feeding the animals, such as hay and feed grains, if the ranch includes arable or irrigated land.
