How to Make a Complex Organizational Chart in Google Docs
If you’re having trouble sorting out all your different members or employees, then what you need is an organizational chart. Investopedia (a business-oriented resource) points out that organizational charts work very well due to how they use easy shapes and lines. When it comes to any complicated personnel roster, an organizational chart’s simple yet intuitive visuals definitely help.
Are you figuring out how to create your own organizational chart in Google Docs? Look no further—we’ve got you covered with our tips right below!
1. Create Your Organogram in the Drawing Window
The Drawing feature is the most important feature in Google Docs for making a diagram. Access this tool by going to Insert > Drawing and then selecting New.
Upon doing so, a smaller secondary interface is now visible in Docs. This is the Drawing window, which is where your whole organizational chart is made.
2. Title Your Complex Organizational Chart
At the top of your chart document, provide a title that describes the contents. In the Drawing window’s own toolbar, click on Text Box (the “T” icon) and place the object in the aforementioned area.
Type in the title by simply clicking the text box and typing away. For an informative title, go with something like “School Business Commercial Team” or “Healthcare Customer Service Department.”
Resize the text box by click-dragging the nodes on its sides. Move it around by click-dragging the object itself.
3. Add Shapes to Your Complex Organizational Chart
When working on your chart structure, you need a few simple shapes. These shapes are where different names and job positions are written.
Next to Text Box, open the Shape menu. Choose either an oval or rectangle as the first shape. Start with the highest position (such as a board executive or general manager) in the hierarchy, typing in the necessary information by selecting the shape first. As you continue building the diagram, make the various layers easier to follow by including other basic shapes.
4. Dictate The Chart’s Flow with Lines
Lines are involved when showing how one member relates to another. For this part, you need the Select Line menu, which is located to the left of the Shape menu.
Pick one of the Connectors in Select Line and then place your choice in-between two related shapes. Click-drag one end of the line to a shape’s purple node, doing the same for the other end with a different shape. And with that, both shapes are now connected by a self-adjusting line.
After going through our tips, alleviating confusion from your staff hierarchy is now a simple effort! Finally, be sure to download our Complex Organizational Chart Templates for streamlining your diagram assembly.
