What Is a Sign?
A sign, sometimes interchangeably called a symbol, is a visually plain graphic representation of an instruction or a rule such as no smoking signs, road signs, etc. Signs help people understand the rules in the city or area through visuals. Most signs are universal and contain three aspects or categories, which is to regulate, to warn, and to inform. A universal sign is a visual representation by which is easily understood by the majority, such as restroom signs. A person with a dress sign implies the ladies' restroom while a person no dress implies a male restroom.
Another example of universal signs is a road sign. According to driving-tests.org, “road signs are extremely important while you are driving.” Road signs help drivers understand a road’s or a path’s form and condition. Road signs help drivers avoid a catastrophe by following road signs.
How to Make Sign Templates in Illustrator
1. Follow the Standard
Some signs are part of architecture and engineering, and these signs have standards. Just like security doors and emergency exits, you must look up the standards and measurements of signs in architecture and engineering books. Creating architectural or engineering signs isn’t as easy as singing. You need to look up the height and format of each of these types of signs. However, if you will only make signs for holiday events even if there is still a format, you don’t need to be so strict. These types of sign presentations are left to the creator’s decision. But still do remember that there are perfect formats for such signs too.
2. Shape and Form of the Sign
According to Plato, everything has an ideal version of form and shape. These ideal versions are the perfect examples that must be followed. Each shape or form of a sign has a purpose. For example, you are creating road signs. Octagon shapes are used for Stop. Circles for Advance Warnings or Grade Crossing. Pentagons are used for School Advance Warning. Squares are used for Regulatory and Guide means. The list goes on with these creative documents. Do research on shapes and their purpose or meaning.
3. The Meaning of Color
Similar to shapes, colors also give hints on what to expect in a creative logo or sign design. When talking about road signs, yellow means warning, green means follow, blue means gas stations or other services, brown means parks, and orange alerts you with dangers. However, these are road sign-color meanings. These colors might mean something different if used in a different context, so research the other meanings and purposes of each color mentioned and also those that are not mentioned here.
4. Images and Fonts Give Meaning Too
Images and fonts function similarly with shape and color. Depending on the situation, whether you might be making creative digital signage for a business meeting or an upcoming event, you must know well what font style to use and what images to place. For example, when talking about road signs, an image of a person walking means that the driver must be careful when crossing because they might hit a pedestrian. However, these are meant for technical signs. Creative signs are more loose and free. You can opt to use any image or font, as long these two files complement one another and look appealing.
